Floatin’ (and falling) Down a River…

So this last weekend I had the lovely opportunity to go canoeing with my husband and friends. I can’t even tell you the last time I was ever in a canoe. It was probably when I was in Girl Scouts. Ya, it was that long ago. Now I love me some kayaking. Or a day of fishing out on a pontoon boat. But canoe?! Can’t say I’m a huge fan. There’s always something about them that just makes me nervous. Mostly the way you have to sit in them and row. I just never feel safe or secure. Anyways, back to the story….

So our group of 10 decided to go canoeing over Memorial Day Weekend. With the temps being in the mid 80’s all week, I was excited. I figured it would be a good way to kick off the summer. Well, then cold temps crept back in. Booooo. It only ended up being barely 60 degrees on Saturday with a decent strong wind here and there. Ok, I thought. I can still do this. I’ll just dress warm. No big deal. We all got our canoes and headed out. The place we went to was called Camp Hi Canoe Livery. They drove you down to the drop in place for your canoes and then you canoed the 7 miles back to your car. Or 13 miles if you’re feeling really adventurous. Our group did the 7 miles. All things were going good….I felt really uneasy immediately getting into the canoe, but figured I would adjust. Wrong. The only time I actually felt secure was when our group tied our canoes together using some of our life jackets. Stupid, I know. We tied our canoes together and just calmly floated along where it was wide and open. There was really no current, a small one if anything. After floating together for a bit we decided to untie and paddle some. That’s when the day went to crap. About 10 minutes after paddling is when it happened. I was in the front of the canoe and husband was in the back. We had just navigated around some other obstacles and I thought he was still paying attention and paddling. Butttttttt he wasn’t. Stupid beer. We were heading straight for a huge fallen tree in the river with big branches sticking out. By the time he realized what I was fussing about, I was slamming into the tree branches face first. I tried to push myself past them and duck as much as I could, but husband started to lean in a panic. Wronnnnnnng thing to do. In a split second we flipped and were dropped into the freezing cold water. Not only was it freezing cold, but it was deep. Neither one of us could stand. Luckily, our friends were right by us and helped us get out by the bank. They also rescued our backpack where my beloved phone was being stored!! One of the girls in our group had an extra pair of clothes with her and she let me use them. I was so cold it was ridiculous. Poor husband didn’t have any dry clothes to change in to.

This only affirmed my original feelings for canoes…..I’m not a fan. I only got a few scrapes on my hand and a nice sized bruise on my knee from our tipping over. It could have been worse! I don’t think I’ll be getting back in one for a loooooong time. I still had fun with my friends, and making a few new ones. Next year husband and I will be kayaking. Hah!

Here are some pictures from the canoe trip!

Who Doesn’t Bleed When They’re Stuck With a Needle?!

Me! That’s who!! I went to have blood drawn this morning to see why I’m bruising like I am. The phlebotomist tried my left arm first. She stuck the little butterfly needle in, and I saw a little blood go into the tube. I then felt her moving the needle around under my skin. I was not bleeding!! Who the heck doesn’t bleed when a freakin needle is in their arm?!? So needless to say, she had to give up on that arm and move on to my right arm. At this point I was starting to feel really lightheaded and nauseous. Awesome. Luckily she was able to hit my vein right away and get the blood she needed because I was not feeling good. I needed to lay down for a few minutes because I felt like I was going to pass out. No bueno.

I had the same problem last time I tried to get blood drawn. She couldn’t get my left vein to bleed, dug around under my skin, and then ended up in my right arm. I got woozy that time too. So from now on, my left arm is a no go for getting blood drawn. I’ve learned my lesson!!

Hopefully I will hear back from my doctor later on today. She wasn’t very nice so I don’t think I want to keep her as my primary care doctor. I’m really bummed that I’m not able to run in this beautiful weather we have today. Or dance this week either. Super bummed. Hopefully my leg feels better soon!

Master Class with Allison DeBona

OMG. Guys.

I get to meet AND dance with Allison DeBona. She’s a real ballerina. She is a demi-soloist with Ballet West and stars in the CW’s show, Breaking Pointe, which is coming out with season 2 this summer! I originally wrote about her coming to Cleveland here. Ballet in Cleveland is bringing her to Cleveland this weekend for a master class taught by Allison. So exciting! I didn’t think I was going to be able to go, but thankfully the lovely Jessica Wallis who runs Ballet in Cleveland, made it possible for me to attend. I’m so excited. I absolutely love the show Breaking Pointe, and cannot wait for it to return this summer. I’m also very excited to meet Allison and ask her any questions I may have. The master class I’ll be taking is 1.5 hours followed by a 30 minute Q&A session with Allison. Other than my own ballet instructor, I’ve never met a professional ballerina, let alone dance with one! I’m really nervous for the class. It’s for children ages 13-18+ and any college aged students. I have a feeling I will be the only adult there, besides Jessica. And I think I’m ok with that. I have no idea what to expect in class. I’m hoping I can maintain!! This is just such an amazing opportunity, I can’t pass it up. And if I end up being the “worst” there because of my age and skill level, then that’s ok. I’ll never see any of these girls again. Or, for all I know I will be just as good as them and blow them away that an “old” person can dance too. I’m hoping for the latter. Hah! Either way I think it will be fun. I’ll be sure to follow up with my experience and post any pictures I may be able to take. Yay!! πŸ™‚

Christmas Tree 2012

As you all know, my husband and I went to pick out our Christmas tree yesterday!!! We go to a local place every year called Greig Tree Farm. We’ve never had a bad tree from them. This year’s pick was harder than last. Last year the first tree we saw was “the one”. This year it took a little longer. I think we looked at 5-7 trees!! We finally settled on one and then my inlaws finally picked “the one” too. I love doing this with them. Every year now we go and have brunch at this local place then go pick our trees. It’s so much fun!! We put the tree in the stand when we got home and let it open up.

Today was decorating day!! My husband is always in charge of putting the lights on the tree. Then I put the ornaments on. He gets to put a few up lol. We have certainly grown our collection since we’ve been married!! We have a beautiful Disney collection starting. Every year we have gone to Disney together, we get an ornament to remember our trip. It’s usually either a Mickey and Minnie holiday one, or one with the whole gang on it with the year written on it. I love this ornaments so much. These get placed high up on the tree so no bad little kitties or dumb doggy break them. I’ve also started getting unique glass ornaments from Macy’s every year. I have some really pretty birds, owls, round glass ones, feathery birds, etc. I love decorating the tree. I look forward to doing it all year long. And last but certainly not least, our tree is never complete without the Disney Monorail underneath it. My husband is also in charge of this. He loves this thing. We got it last year on our trip down there and have said it will go under the tree every year.

Pretty soon gifts will be piling up under the tree!! I love giving gifts (and receiving!!!), but man do I hate wrapping them!! All that work and it takes 2 seconds to rip it off. At least they look pretty!! Even the dog and kitties get gifts under the tree and their stockings!!

Even though it is now officially December, it has been raining all day here. What?!?! I actually am kind of looking forward to some snow. Last year we barely got any and it just wasn’t the same.

Well, back to the grind tomorrow!! The husband and I have officially decided to hold off on hard core dieting until after the holidays. I’m still going to eat healthy everyday.

Hope everyone had a great weekend!! πŸŽ„πŸŽ…πŸŽπŸ˜ƒ

Man Pie Bake Off

Hope everyone had a great weekend! I know I did!! Friday night I relaxed and did some blogging while the husband baked his cake. Saturday I did some grocery shopping and then the Man Pie Bake Off was in the evening. The event took place at Legal Ballerina’s and her whole family was there! This year’s theme was “Anything Chocolate” There were 5 entries in the contest this year. My husband came in 4th place. Not too bad since it was his first year (and first time baking ever)!! He made a Triple Layer Brownie Mousse Cake. Sadly, it didn’t turn out as good as the first time he made it. That night was a lot of fun. I went off my diet, as did my husband for the day. I consumed more chocolate than was necessary. Back on the diet again today though. I can’t believe how much better I feel when I’m on it. Anyways…

Today I spent the day cleaning, went to Old Navy and got some new things, and then made dinner for my inlaws and us. We hung out for a bit and then here I am!! Exciting week ahead for me and LB!! We are getting fitted for our Gaynor’s this Wednesday!! I’m so excited!! I really hope they work out for me.

Other than that it’s the same old routine with ballet. Second session is in full swing now. We will be starting our other recital dances in my other classes soon, so that will be exciting. Didn’t have class last Thursday since my teacher was sick. So I’m very excited to be back tomorrow.

Here are the entries from the Man Pie Bake Off!! Don’t they look just delicious!! (Trust me, they were!! πŸ™‚ )

Ready, Set, Go!

It’s 11:30. This means I have 30 minutes until my diet officially starts. And I’m scared!! I’m doing a low carbohydrate, or Atkins diet. My husband, his father, mother, and my mother, have all had great success with this. My goal is drop at least 15 pounds. I’ve never tried this diet before but I’m really going to go at it hard. I’m such a carb queen that I’m actually scared lol. But I HAVE to lose this extra weight. I don’t like the way I look or feel. And I really want to look good for our recital in June. So this is the best way to jump start the weight loss. I’ll be eating high protein and aiming to keep my carbs to 20 grams or less a day. If you’re not familiar with carbs, take a look at your nutrition labels. There are carbs in practically everything you eat. Meat, cheese, and veggies are mostly low carb. So this will be what I am eating. Carbohydrates are the same thing as sugar. Carbs = Sugar. Our bodies were not designed to eat high carb diets. Hence why the obesity rates are so high and children are so over weight. Health and science along with the physiology of your body is an incredible thing to study. I studied for hours upon hours in dental hygiene school about these topics. My husband took 4 years of graduate level health and science classes, so he’s a genius when it comes to the body and the science behind how and why it works the way it does. I’ve learned a lot from him.

So instead of munching on left over birthday cake for the rest if the upcoming week, I will sadly be sending it to my husband’s work so the ladies there can enjoy it. Sigh. But I can’t wait to look and feel better about myself.

Goodbye dear carbs, it’s been a fun time. I do not want to say goodbye, but I need to. We’ll see each other again some day. Just not right now.

With 15 minutes left until midnight…I have officially broken up with carbohydrates.

Ballet in Cleveland

After celebrating my birthday all day today, I finally have some time to blog! But first, here is all of the awesome gifts I got for my birthday! I’m so very lucky to have such great friends and family. I love them all!! And I loved my gifts!!

20121104-210247.jpg

Now, onto the exciting news I have!! Today I came across an organization called, Ballet in Cleveland ran by a woman named Jessica Wallis. She is a dancer/teacher who started up a non-profit organization to help bring professional classical ballet to Cleveland. I had to link you to their Facebook page, because as of right now their website has not launched. It’s set to launch Monday or Tuesday. You will be able to find it at www.balletincleveland.org. I decided to message her on Facebook today and expressed my interest to her in this organization. I told her that I was an adult who takes ballet and pointe, non-professionally, and that I absolutely loved the message she is trying to spread in my city. I told her I was also interested in getting involved with her organization. Well, wouldn’t ya know? She messaged me back. She wants to meet me! ME! I am thrilled!!! So this Wednesday I am meeting her for coffee!! I told her how my BFF, Legal Ballerina, also takes dance with me. I told her that our teacher was a professional ballerina too. And she would love to meet all of us! I also mentioned to her in the email that my BFF and I have tickets to the Joffrey Ballet’s Nutcracker show at the end of November. She expressed much interest in LB and I meeting up with her before or after the show at her organization’s meet up!! Their office will be located right next to the Palace Theater that will house the ballet. I AM SO EXCITED. Who knows what this will bring me?!?! What it will do for Cleveland?!?!? I wish Cleveland had a professional ballet company. It would be awesome if they did, but sadly they do not. I’m hoping to be able to get involved with this organization at whatever level I can!! I want to spread the joy of ballet to as many people as I can. This may be the way to do it!!
So, to many of you, this may not be as exciting as you thought my news would be. But for me, this is super big! Someone wants to meet me. I can’t wait to meet her! What yet another awesome “gift” for me today!!

Oh, and did I mention that Mary Helen Bowers tweeted me today?!??! Yup, that’s right! I tweeted her my picture of the ballet workout DVD I got, and she replied!! So awesome. First famous person to reply to me! Squuueeeee!!!!

Oh ya, I may have also got 4 more Disney puzzles. Oops. I can’t help it! They’re just so cute and fun!

I’m pretty sure I can mark my 26th birthday as a WIN. Thanks to everyone for all the sweet messages!

Oh, and keep your eyes peeled for some new additions to my blog! I will be starting some fun, new things soon!

Feet Flexibility

My Halloween this year will consist of working (only for a half day!), evading the ridiculous rain, stretching, maybe some practicing, and hopefully watching a scary movie with the husband!! I’m so ready for this rain to be done with. It’s been raining consistently since Saturday. Enough already! I think our town moved trick or treating until the weekend, but I don’t think we’ll be passing out candy anyways. I’ve kind of been slacking on the stretching since last week. So I must do it tonight.

Here are a few videos I like that show different ways to increase foot and ankle flexibility and how to warm up before stretching them. Let me know if you do any of these exercises and what you think!
