New Ballet Shoes = No Bueno

Nothing sucks more than finally getting the long awaited package in the mail with your new ballet shoes to only open it up, try them on, and not like them. I came across these new ballet shoes from a newer company known as MDM. They came into the market in 2011 I believe. Their new, one of a kind shoes, are made with a type of arch support system in them. They come in either canvas or leather. I ordered the canvas because that’s what I’ve been dancing in. One of the only reasons I switched from using leather shoes to canvas ones was because of the metatarsal pain I was getting in the leather ones. I put these no slip ball of foot cushions in my old leather shoes to help with the pain, but it didn’t cure it all the way. So I decided to try a canvas shoe on the recommendation of LB. I now currently wear Bloch Adult “Pro-Elastic” shoes. Ever since I got them I haven’t had any metatarsal pain. I don’t even need to put in cushions. Awesome, I know, right?!

So then my curious little self came across these new canvas shoes. I told LB all about them and we decided to both give them a try. I sadly did not like them from the moment I put them on. For a company that is run by ex-professional dancers you think this shoe would have been better. First off, the color is ugly. They are so light pink they almost look white. Gross. They were a little tight on me, but the next size up would have been too big. I tried to dance in them one night at class only to find that they stuck to the ground. I did not like them. The built in arch support is nice, but the shoe’s overall look is just not going to cut it for me. Since I only danced in them once, for about 30 minutes, I’m most likely going to try to sell them on eBay. I was very disappointed in them. They did nothing to make my feet look better than my current shoes already do.

Here are the cushions that I have used in the past in my ballet shoes. I highly recommend them!

Here are the MDM Canvas Ballet Shoes. At least they came with a cute little satin dust bag??

What type/brand of ballet shoes do you wear?
Do you ever wish you could design your own ballet shoes or leotards?

  1. I’ve never had much luck ordering dance gear online. Always have better luck at the store around the corner from our school, especially when it comes to shoes. I had a pair of canvas split-soles that I loved and wore for about three years until they fell apart. The store no longer carried them when I had to replace them, so now I have leather, which is OK, but they’re starting to get holes, too.

Good luck finding a new pair that works for you.

    • I usually only order ballet gear online once I know I like it. I got fitted in a store for my pointe shoes and once I knew the basic sizing for me I was then able to order new pairs online much cheaper. I kinda miss my leather shoes!! But these canvas don’t give me pain so they are my friends! Hah! πŸ™‚

  2. Just got fitted for ballet slippers, got leather. Years ago, when I tried to do some ballet exercises via DVD, I ordered a canvas split-sole pair online. Never again! Curious about the canvas, too, but starting with these. Glad there is a brand (the Bloch, right?) that you can wear without pain. So you’ll be sticking with those for now then?

I do hate that disappointment when an online order does not work out. That would be my leotard recently ordered. Gave it to my friend, rather than pay $$$ for shipping back to exchange.

    • Ya I will remain wearing my lovely Bloch canvas ones for now. With our recital coming up in 2 weeks I don’t really have the time to switch it up. I also dislike having to return things that cost $$ to ship back. I came across a dance supply website: that has free shipping and returns. I love it!! They’re prices are much cheaper than buying from my local dance stores. Glad you were able to switch off your leotard for that wrap sweater with your friend! πŸ™‚

      • Thx for website, I knew about that one, but have not purchased from them yet. Think I’ll check it out again and add to my faves!

  3. I wear the Sansha ballet slipper, canvas split-sole. They are really comfy and they make my feet look better than the Papillon leather split-sole ever did. However they wear out reaaaally fast at the tip of my big toe.. Not a very fancy sight, that toe sticking out πŸ˜€

  4. My daughter’s ballet school just recently required every student to wear MDM shoes for the RAD exam and their annual concert.
So I just placed an order for her shoes today! I agree that the front bit and side bit a little loose during fitting but the lady offered to have slimmer style. So cross my fingers my daughter likes her new shoes.
I prefer her feet looks in her old Bloch leather shoes for beauty and cost reasons. Thanks for your posting.
